Lamborghini build a record 1,305 cars last year, about 300 more than expected.

The previous record was 672 in 1991. Production in 2002 was 422 because the company was building only the Murcielago, Automotive News Europe reported.

The Italian sports car maker, which is part of Volkswagen AG, built 890 new Gallardos, nearly 300 more than expected, and 415 Murcielagos.

Lamborghini aims to top its 2003 record to meet increased demand for the Gallardo. This year’s total production goal is 1,850, which will include about 1,450 Gallardos and 400 Murcielagos.

The ragtop version of the Murcielago, called the Barchetta, is expected to account for 50% of the model’s volume. The car will debut at the Geneva motor show in March. The Gallardo roadster will debut in late 2005 or early 2006.
