Sales of new cars in Italy fell 18.9% year-on-year in October to 167,940 units according to data released by Italian automotive trade body ANFIA.
The scale of the decline suggests some acceleration in the detariorating demand trend.
Cumulative car sales in the first ten months reached 1.879m units, a decline of 12% on the same period last year.
Fiat Group sales fell 13% in October but its market share edged up slightly to 33%.
Import marques generally recorded substantial declines in October though Nissan and Mazda both bucked the trend with gains over last year. Nissan sales were up almost 10% to 3,757 cars while Mazda also recorded a gain of almost 10% to 1,566 units.
