Principal union at Fiat’s Officine Automobilistiche di Grugliasco plant near Turin, FIOM, is to ballot all workers on 2 May concerning the automaker’s plans for the site.

FIOM, together with fellow Italian labour bodies FIM, UILM and FISMIC met Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne this week to discuss the deal, with the manufacturer noting all were in agreement but that FIOM created “an impediment.”

“They [Fiat] wanted to use the same agreement that was signed concerning [the] Pomigliano plant,” a FIOM spokesman in Italy told just-auto. But the Bertone [former Grugliasco site]  plant will be under the same working conditions and same rules.”

“This agreement with Pomigliano… this will substitute the national metalworkers agreement – this is the killer of the national agreement.”

The spokesman added the ballot at the Grugliasco plant would take place on 2 and 3 May, where FIOM is “by far” the largest union.

However, at the meeting this week, Fiat flexed its muscles by insisting it would be “impossible” to achieve its objectives without the “consensus of the union that has the largest number of employees,” a reference without naming them, to FIOM.

“As such, if that trade union organisation does not declare its explicit support for the plan within a very brief period of time, Fiat will abandon the project and begin the search for a new location for production of the new E-segment Maserati,” noted a Fiat statement.

“While the company will take the request of CISL, UIL and FISMIC to give preference to an Italian site into consideration, it reserves the right to evaluate other options.”
