Fiat has said in an official statement that if it acquires Opel, job losses in Europe will be up to 10,000.

It says job reductions would be ‘less than 10,000’, rather than the 18,000 figure for German redundancies it says has ‘been circulating’.

In the statement Fiat Group says ‘these comments [concerning 18,000 job losses] are entirely unfounded’.

The statement goes on to say:

“The Fiat plan is for total employee reductions – which would take place gradually and be distributed throughout Europe – of less than 10,000. The impact for the workforce in Germany, therefore, would be significantly lower than speculated.”
