Fiat Automobiles CEO Luca de Meo told Automotive News Europe (ANE) that sales of the SUV are better “than our most optimistic expectations.”

Fiat originally contracted Suzuki to build 20,000 Sedicis a year at its plant in Hungary. The SUV, which is based on the Suzuki Swift, has been selling so well since its introduction last March that Fiat got almost twice its allotment – 38,000 units – this year.

De Meo told Automotive News Europe that the car has broadened Fiat’s lineup and attracted families who want a car that looks like an SUV, rather than an off-road vehicle.

Suzuki sells its own version badged SX4. Versions sold outside Europe are made in Japan.
