Fiat will maintain its workforce at current levels provided that was financially sustainable, chief executive Sergio Marchionne said on Thursday at a meeting between the automaker, Italian government and unions.

Marchionne added he expects commercial vehicle unit Iveco’s plants to operate at one third of their capacity this year, according to Reuters.

He added he could “not imagine the company without its strong ties in Italy” and that he hoped for European ecological car incentives to stimulate demand.

Italy’s CGIL union federation head Guglielmo Epifani told the news agency it was willing to cooperate on a development plan for Fiat, but wanted guarantees on jobs.

“From the CGIL there is no plan to create opposition because at this delicate moment we don’t want any problems about jobs,” he said after the meeting.
