Italvolt is to build the first gigafactory in Italy for lithium ion batteries production and storage, which it claims will become the largest in Europe and the twelfth in the world by size, with 300,000 m 2 planned and an initial capacity of 45 GWh, potentially reaching 70 Gwh.

With an estimated 4,000 workers employed and a total of 10,000 new jobs created, the Italvolt gigafactory will have a total investment of around EUR4bn (US$4.9bn).

The first phase of the project will be completed by spring, 2024.

The first step of the project involves the identification of the area where the plant will be built, at the end of the due diligence activity currently underway on some selected sites at national level.

The new plant will be able to contribute with its own production to the growing demand for batteries in Europe, largely coming from the automotive industry. Italvolt says this will increase globally by 17 times to around 3,600 gigawatts by 2030, with an expected demand from the European Union of 565 GWh, behind only China, with an expected demand of 1,548 GWh.

Italvolt’s gigaplant will be designed by the Architecture division of Pininfarina and is already operating on projects of similar scale.

Comau with more than 45 years of experience and specialisation in electrification processes, will be the supplier of solutions, systems and technologies for the gigaplant . Comau will also be responsible for the construction of the Research and Development laboratory, which will welcome academics and industrial partners.

“With the project of our gigafactory, Italvolt wants to give an important answer to the historic opportunity of green industrialisation, which is affecting all production sectors in a transversal way, with a socio-economic impact, which will represent a turning point for the global economy,” said Italvolt CEO and founder, Lars Carlstrom.

“An opportunity, that of the green transition’ at an industrial level, which has always fascinated me and through the launch of Italvolt, this passion will become a reality. I strongly believe our team of highly skilled engineers and technicians will be able to achieve the greenest battery production not only in Europe, but around the world.

“Our goal is to secure the future of the automotive industry and ensure the supply chain is as green as possible, from start to finish. The socio-economic impact the new green industrialisation brings with it will represent a turning point for the world.”
