Mehr news agency, quoted by Press TV, said the 14-member group of students at Tehran’s Khaje Nasir Toosi University, who developed the new car, initially planned it for a competition at Sharif University but later decided to design it in a way that it could be produced in volume.

The car named Qasedak-e-Nasir (Dandelion of Nasir) was unveiled at a ceremony in Tehran.

It weighs 700kg and can reach 80km/h (about 50mph), acceptable for an urban vehicle.

“Once the Qasedak-e-Nasir is fully charged it could travle up to 50km (30 miles) in a city and, if speed does not exceed 25km/h, the distance could rise to 80km (50 miles,” development team member Asghar-Mohammadi was quoted as saying.
