Iran Khodro (IKCO) says it will start mass production of its Peugeot 206 sedan-based Runna ‘national car’ in the second half of the next Iranian year or in almost 12 months from now, following dietooling.

Producing about 50 dies destined for main body parts, and a further 100 for smaller components locally, is estimated to save US$5m, claims IKCO.

“The project of producing dies required for Runna’s production line has started in IKID [Iran Khodro Industrial Dies] and is currently at the design stage,” said IKCO deputy CEO Javad Soleimani.

“One thousand Runnas will be manufactured in the first quarter of the next Iranian year [February to April, 2011] and we hope to see it in mass production phase in August 2011,” he added.

Designed on a new platform for the B and C segments, the Runna was unveiled in April last year. Local media reports at the time said the automaker planned exports to Turkey. IKCO said then the Runna was the first Iranian car to meet Euro IV and V pollution standards.

The Runna will offer 1.6-litre petrol and 1.7-litre CNG engines. Volume is forecast at 150,000 units per annum, 25% of which are due for export. IKCO will also be able to produce Runna in its overseas factories.

IKCO will also unveil its new, also Peugeot-based Samand line – the NX7 – by the end of the current Iranian year – 20 March 2011.

“The new Samand has the EF7 petrol engine and turbocharged EF7; TU5 and national diesel engines are future possible options for it”, said IKCO new products development deputy CEO Nima Mosleh.

“In order to pass front impact tests, as well as front passenger airbags, there have been changes to the design of the body and steering system in comparison with the existing Samand.”
