Nissan North America is recalling 28,182 2014-2016 Q50 models made from 26 December 2012 to 11 December 2015 plus Q50 Hybrids made 10 December 2012 to 17 December 2015 because software may incorrectly set the direct adaptive steering at start up, altering the vehicle's steering responsiveness and turning radius.

"If the vehicle does not steer as the driver anticipates, there is an increased the risk of a crash," and NHTSA statement said.

Nissan dealers will re-programme the steering ECU software in a recall is expected to start by 9 August 2016.

The Q50 made its global debut at the Detroit motor show in January 2013 and production at Nissan's Tochigi plant in Japan followed four months later. The car went on sale from August 2013 in North America with a 328hp 3.7-litre V6. Both rear- and all-wheel drive variants were available.

A long wheelbase version was Infiniti's first model to be built in China.

The 2016 model year NAFTA range, announced in August 2015, added a two-litre Mercedes-Benz (but Nissan-built) petrol engine option while a 400hp three-litre turbo V6 was also new for 2016. A 300hp version was added two months later. The VR-series engine family replaced the 3.7-litre V6.
