Vehicle sales in Indonesia rose 34.6% to 64,762 units in August, from 48,099 units a year earlier, according to industry association Gaikindo.

Compared with near-record volumes in the previous month, sales were down 10% in August – reflecting reduced plant shifts during the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan.

Total vehicle production fell 20% during the month, according to Johnny Darmawan, president director of Toyota Astra Motor, the country’s largest vehicle distributor.

Lower output is also expected in September due to the annual Idul Fitri holidays and this will inevitably have a negative effect on the month’s sales volumes, given the high capacity utilisation at present.

The August data brings the eight month tally to 507,060 units – up 69% from the 300,255 units sold in the same period a year earlier. Gaikindo remains upbeat about the full year prospects for the market, given the historically low interest rates and the easily available credit.

The organisation now expects sales to reach a new record of 750,000 units this year, up 54% from the 486,000 units sold a year earlier, and 24% higher than the previous record of 607,000 units sold in 2008.

Gaikindo expects a strong fourth quarter performance to follow the current growth slowdown. If these forecasts are confirmed, Indonesia will likely surpass Thailand as the largest market in south east Asia this year.
