Toyota Astra Motor has launched the Etios Valco small hatchback in Indonesia, produced at PT Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia’s assembly plant in Karawang in West Java.

The car, already available in India as the Etios Liva, will be available in three variants with prices ranging between IDR 135 million and IDR 162 million. The model slots in below the Yaris and is fitted with a 1.2L engine.

The company expects to sell around 20,000 units this year, as it takes on competing models such as the Honda Brio, Mitsubishi Mirage and Nissan March models.

The market for hatchback passenger cars is still small in Indonesia, with just over 42,000 units sold last year – according to data gathered by industry association Gaikindo. But the segment is expected to expand rapidly over the coming years as the country’s middle-class population grows and as vehicle manufactures expand their product ranges.
