The 19th International Indonesia Motor Show (IMS) got under way at the weekend amid bullish sentiment on the prospects for the local vehicle market.

With interest rates close to historic lows, the domestic market continues to clock up new record highs, according to data released by automotive industry association Gaikindo. A total of 765,000 vehicles were sold domestically in 2010 and the market expanded by a further 13% to 417,687 units in the first half of 2010.

Gaikindo chairman Sudirman Rusdi said domestic vehicle output could potentially reach 2m units by 2018, if the market continues to improve as it has done recently. Last year, close to 720,000 vehicles were produced in the country.

At the show, Honda launched an updated Jazz (Fit) model, its best selling model in Indonesia, while Daihatsu launched a fully redesigned Sirion – a small car imported from Malaysia.

Toyota refreshed the ageing Innova MPV with a new front grille and headlights and indicated that a full replacement will not appear “for another year or two”. The company also unveiled a restyled Fortuner SUV, a model based on the same Innova platform.

Nissan strengthened its SUV line-up with a facelifted XTrail and also showcased its Juke compact SUV which went into production locally in May and was launched in June. The company also confirmed that it plans to invest US$250m to triple capacity to 180,000 units by 2013.
