New vehicle sales in Indonesia jumped by 11.5% to 95,892 units in January from like for like sales of 85,978 units a year earlier, according to wholesale data compiled by industry association Gaikindo.

The market rebounded strongly last month despite continued sluggish domestic economic growth, after drifting lower throughout the second half of last year.

Last month’s sales were lifted by the recent launch of the Mitsubishi Xpander compact MPV which helped drive the brand into third position in the domestic wholesale table with 17,750 sales, according to local reports.

Honda, which rose rapidly up the table in the last four years, dropped back into fourth place with just 13,570 sales last month. The two leading brands were Toyota and Daihatsu, with sales of 25,400 units and 18,790 units respectively.

A surprise inclusion in the top 10 table in January was [GM/SAIC’s] Wuling, which reported sales of 930 Confero compact MPVs. A second larger MPV model, the Cortez, went on sale this month.

Gaikindo secretary general Kukuh Kumara in January said he did not expect overall vehicle sales in 2018 to improve significantly from last year. He forecast total industry volumes to rise by less than 3% to 1.1m units this year with regional elections helping to underpin demand.
