New vehicle sales in Indonesia jumped to a new record high in July, with sales rising by over 23% to 88,751 units compared with 72,090 units a year earlier – according to data released by industry association Gaikindo.

The sharp spike followed three months of weak sales as key Japanese manufacturers struggled with inventory shortages in the wake of the devastating earthquake in Japan in March.

The latest data suggested that the Japanese automotive supply chain was well on its way to full recovery. July sales rose by over 26% compared with 70,157 sales in June and were 45% higher than an average of around 61,000 units sold in April and May.

Gaikindo chairman, Sudirman Maman Rusdi, said the jump in sales did not include 11,585 vehicle orders taken at last month’s motor show, worth around IDR3,270bn (US$390m). Deliveries of these will take place over the next two months.

Cumulative sales in the first seven months of the year reached 506,438 units, up by 14.5% compared with 442,298 units sold a year earlier. Toyota reported an 8.7% sales increase to 182,583 in this period, followed by Daihatsu with a 16% rise to 76,530 units.

Gaikindo remained cautious in its full year outlook, given the recent turmoil in global markets. It expects the domestic market to exceed 800,000 units this year, down from an earlier forecast of 850,000 units.
