Initial quality of new vehicles in Indonesia was 154 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100) in 2005, according to the JD Power Asia Pacific 2005 Indonesia Initial Quality surevy – a marginal improvement of 7 PP100 over 2004.
The study, now in its third year, measures new vehicle quality in the first two to six months of ownership.
The composition of problems in Indonesia has remained fairly stable over the past three years. Ride, handling and braking and engine continued to be the top two problem categories, together contributing to more than one-third (36%) of all problems reported by new-vehicle owners.
Excessive fuel consumption and difficulty in operating the manual transmission remained the top two problem symptoms experienced.
The Suzuki Aerio ranks highest in initial quality in the entry midsize segment with an IQS score of 115 PP100. Improvements in the vehicle interior; engine; HVAC; vehicle exterior; transmission; and ride, handling and braking problem categories contributed toward an overall improvement of 30 PP100 since 2004.

The study also found a correlation between vehicle quality and customer satisfaction with the overall ownership experience as well as with future advocacy intentions. The proportion of customers who said they were “pleased” or “delighted” (rating it an 8 to 10 on a 10-point scale) with their overall ownership experience was more than twice as high when no problems were encountered compared to owners who experienced three or more problems.
Noted Rajeev Nair, country manager at JD Power Asia Pacific: “While one in three customers (33%) who do not experience any problems with their vehicle’s quality say they would ‘definitely’ recommend the model to a friend or a relative, this drops to fewer than one in eight (13%) among customers who experience three problems or more.”
The 2005 Indonesia IQS was based on evaluations of 2,378 new-vehicle owners representing 13 makes and 42 models, and includes owners who purchased their vehicles between December 2004 and June 2005.
