New vehicle sales in Indonesia fell by 19.3% to 78,802 units in December, from 97,691 units a year earlier, according to data released by industry association Gaikindo.
Buying activity was affected by fuel price increases and a hike in the benchmark interest rate in the previous month, further undermining business and consumer sentiment already affected by slowing economic growth throughout the year.
Full year sales fell by 1.8% to 1,208,019 units, from 1,229,901 units in the previous year. Sales of low cost green cars increased by 236% to 172,120 units, compared with 51,190 units sold in the final four months of 2013.
This offset a 14.6% drop in other light passenger vehicle sales to 707,341 units and a 6.2% decline in commercial vehicle sales to 328,558 units.
Toyota’s sales fell by 8.1% to 399,746 units, with sales affected by stronger competition in the compact MPV segment. Daihatsu sales were just slightly lower at 185,226 units, while Suzuki’s sales were 5.5% lower at 154,923 units.
The launch of the Mobilio compact MPV at the end of 2013 helped Honda increase its sales by almost 74% to 159,147 units.
