Astra-Daihatsu Motor (ADM), Indonesia’s largest vehicle producer, announced it is planning to launch a new model in 2016 designed for emerging markets.

Prijono Sugiarto, the president director Astra International – ADM’s second-largest shareholder, told local reporters that the new model would help the company achieve cumulative output since its inception in 1978 of five million units by the end of 2016.

Sugiarto said the new model will help increase output at ADM to 530,000 units next year, from an expected 430,000 units this year. The new model is expected to cost IDR1tr (US$76.2m) to develop.

It is unclear whether Sugiarto is referring to the replacement of the Daihatsu Xenia and Toyota Avanza, which has been widely rumoured to be launched later this year. The new vehicle will be marketed locally under both the Toyota and Daihatsu brands.

The company is also looking to increase exports gradually, from the current 15% of output to 30%. It currently exports to 48 countries in Asia, South America, the Middle East and Africa.

ADM’s R&D facility at its new assembly plant in Karawang in West Java worked with head office in Japan in the development of the vehicle and Sugianto suggests that Karawang will be capable of “carrying out” a full model change by 2019.
