Volkswagen Group Sales India will become the official importer of Porsche cars into India as the carmaker tres to increase sales to the country’s increasingly affluent population.

Within the national sales company, the Porsche division will focus on all distribution-related areas in India and further develop the dealer network.

Porsche sales and marketing chief in Germany, Bernhard Maier, said: “With an increasingly affluent, upwardly mobile population, India is an important market for Porsche, with a promising future.

“Development of emerging markets is clearly important for the future and we are confident sales in the sub-continent will continue to grow.”

Since 2004, Porsche has sold 1,052 cars in India. In 2011, 85% were Cayenne SUVs.
