Volkswagen and Nissan Motor are considering entering sub-four metre sedan and compact SUV segments in India, seens as the fastest growing segments locally. Vehicles longer than four metres attract higher taxes in India.
The Economic Times of India (ET) said Volkswagen had moved from a “consideration stage” to “final stage” of approval while Nissan Motor India has commissioned a study to explore the segments’ potential.
People close to Volkswagen India told ET the company had internally finalised the programme and would ask vendors to quote for components shortly.
“The project is codenamed VW 2512. If the [quote requests] hit the market in the next couple of months, the product will hit the market by mid-2016. The company hopes to bring in incremental volumes of 40,000 to 60,000 units per annum depending on the market condition,” said a source.
Initially considered for India only, the programme is likely to be extended to all BRIC countries.
Indian engineering and design expertise may also be sought.
