Honda Siel Cars India on Monday (25 February) opened a new manufacturing facility at Greater Noida increasing capacity from 50,000 to 100,000 units a year.

Honda Siel Cars India CEO Masahiro Takedagawa told the Business Standard newspaper capacity can be boosted by 16,000 units in 2009. The company has invested INR16.2bn ($US405.3m; EUR273.5m) in the plant.

Apart from doubling the capacity, the weld shop now has 27 robots and the new paint shop has 12 to apply the final top coat. This automation will speed up the manufacturing process and also increase efficiency on the line, Honda said.

The plant currently produces Honda’s City, Civic and Accord models with local content of 79%, 72% and 34% respectively.

The Civic hybrid will also roll out in a couple of months, a company official told the Business Standard. A small car, initially a petrol version, will be launched in 2009.
