Toyota Kirloskar Motors is aiming to sell 50,000 Innova people carriers this financial year.
There is a waiting list for the Innova, launched a few months back, and buyers must be patient for up to a couple of months for some variants. In June 2005 alone, over 4,600 units were sold.
The Innova replaced the very popular Qualis people mover, which Toyota stopped producing, even though the Qualis was selling around 2,500 units a month and was the largest selling vehicle in the utility vehicle segment.
While the three-generations-old Qualis was very popular as a taxi, the IMV platform-based Innova is primarily being bought for personal use, one of the reasons which prompted Toyota to replace the Qualis.
In 2004, Toyota sold 36,700 units of the Qualis and it expects the Innova to do much better. The Innova has given Toyota improved brand perception and the company is also enjoying a good variant mix as there is greater demand for high end variants.
