The Indian unit of Toyota sold 3,220 Innova cars in India in May, but total sales in the month fell 4% to 4,136 units, Reuters reported.

Toyota also said sales of the Innova had reached 10,096 units in the three months since its launch.

Toyota, which operates in India through a joint venture with India’s Kirloskar group, withdrew its best-selling Qualis utility vehicle in February before launching the three-row seater Innova, which competes with the mid-size Ford Fusion.

“With Innova crossing the 10,000 mark and healthy bookings, we are confident coming months should see Innova not just repeating the success of the Qualis, but exceeding it,” Atsushi Toyoshima, Toyota Kirloskar’s managing director, told the news agency.

Toyota, which plans to double its market share in India to 10% by 2010, aims to sell 45,000 units of the Innova in 2005 and 60,000 units in 2006, Reuters said.
