INDIA: Tata Motors posts sharply better February sales

Tata Motors Group remains "cautiously optimistic" its healthy February sales will translate into improved overall performance this year

Tata Motors Group remains “cautiously optimistic” its healthy February sales will translate into improved overall performance this year.

The group booked global passenger vehicle sales of 89,768 in February, up 59% year on year, while cumulative fiscal year sales, from 1 April 2009 to 28 February 2010, rose 17% to 771,238.

Commercial vehicle sales rose 70% last month to 42,660 units while cumulative fiscal year sales rose 35% to 365,120.

Passenger vehicle sales rose 50% to 47,108 in February while fiscal YTD sales were up 4% to 406,118.

Tata passenger vehicle sales rose 45% to 29,911 for the month while YTD sales rose 24% to 235,674.

Jaguar Land Rover global sales rose 60% in February to 17,197 vehicles. Jaguar volume was up 55% to 3,292 and Land Rover up 62% to 13,905.

However, fiscal year JLR sales dropped 16% to 170,444. Jaguar was off 26% to 42,776 vehicles and Land Rover was down 11% to 127,668.

“Both Tata domestic [India] and Jaguar Land Rover have been good,” a Tata spokesman in India told just-auto on Monday.

“JLR has been growing slowly, that is the sense we get, I [think] people are more confident. We do not provide guidance but we are cautiously optimistic for the entire group – in India we think the market is reviving.”
