Tata Group chairman Ratan Tata on Friday confirmed the Indian conglomerate was interested in acquiring Ford’s Jaguar and Land Rover brands.

“We certainly have some interest in it,” he told the CNBC TV18 television channel in an interview that is yet to be aired, Reuters reported.

“Beyond that we would not like to offer any comment,” he was quoted as saying in response to a question on whether the group was interested in acquiring the brands.

The remarks were made available to Reuters by a Tata spokesman and the full interview will be aired in two parts on Sunday and Monday, the news agency noted, adding that Ford has said earlier this week it planned to have more details on the sale of Jaguar and Land Rover by the end of 2007 or early 2008.

According to the news agency, Tata also reiterated that the small car that Tata Motors is developing would be launched in the first half of fiscal year 2008/2009, and that it would be priced at INR100,000 ($US2,400).

“We are working towards the price … we don’t want to comment on whether it is the ex-factory or on-road price,” he reportedly said in the interview, adding: “It will meet all safety, emission and crash testing standards.”
