The chairman and CEO of Suzuki Motor Corporation Osamu Suzuki yesterday presented a giant five-foot cheque for 1000 crore (10 billion) rupees to the Indian government, represented by the minister for heavy industry and public enterprises Suresh Prabhu.

India’s government has decided to exit in phases its 20-year partnership with Suzuki, that created car maker Maruti Udyog, and the cheque presentation was one stage in that process.

Guests at the event included Harpal Singh, from Green Park in South Delhi, who bought the first Suzuki Alto-based Maruti 800 in December 1983 and still drives it.
