Autorickshaws in Gurgaon and Faridabad may soon be converted into battery-operated electric vehicles under a new state government scheme in Haryana.
The Times of India reported remarks by Haryana environment and forests minister Kiran Choudhry. He said: “A loan-cum-subsidy scheme under the Prime Minister Employment Guarantee Programme (PMEGP) will help the autorickshaw drivers who want to switch over to battery in their old vehicles.”
She added the Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB) also has sufficient funds which would be utilized for the purpose.
The ministry has instructed the HSPCB to organize meeting with district administrations and other authorities for the implementation of the scheme.
“As the pollution levels were increasing due to vehicular emissions, especially from commercial vehicles, it had become necessary to find out a clean and green alternative,” the minister added.
