Utility Vehicles manufacturer Mahindra and Mahindra has set out to expand and integrate its R&D facilities. M&M will invest $100million internally in the project at a new location in either Pune or Chennai.

Here, all of M&M’s R&D work will be done under one roof rather than scattered over all its locations. An integrated facility is required at the diversified group, who has ongoing future development work at its various divisions such as utility vehicles, farm equipment, components and its new international projects. To house facilities for these divisions and cover the entire gamut of R&D, M&M has pledged the sum which will cover a test track, crash test sledge, engine and polymer labs and engine research departments. The integrated facility will streamline the processes hence reduce the development time considerably. Currently, M&M has a strong R&D focus but sees more synergies between divisions if integrated. Its Scorpio program is a testament to its R&D thrust and time to market expertise.

The new site will be finalized subject to negotiations with the state governments for concessions it gets. Once construction begins, completion will take two years after which a total of 1,500 engineers will be employed at the facility.
