Suzuki’s planned new A segment car for Europe will be produced in India.
The low-emissions car will have a one litre engine and be launched in October, according to the German news agency dpa. It will have five doors and be sold in Europe and India, as well as other countries.
Suzuki chief executive Osamu Suzuki would not say what price the car would be but he did say it would be ‘competitive’.
A concept for the model called A-Star will be shown in January at the New Delhi motor show. Suzuki said CO2 emissions would be below those of European competitors.
The car will be produced by Maruti Suzuki, which is 54.21% owned by Suzuki, at its Gurgaon plant. Capacity at the plant will be increased from the current 100,000 units to 300,000 units over the next few years. Suzuki is investing EUR1.2bn in its plants in India through to 2009. By 2010 it should be producing around 960,000 cars in the country each year.
