India’s largest utility vehicle maker, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, will boost production capacity of its popular Scorpio utility vehicle to meet growing demand, a top company official told Reuters on Wednesday.
“The capacity will go up to 2,600 a month next week from about 2,200 now,” Alan Durante, Mahindra’s executive director for its automotive division, told Reuters on the sidelines of an industry seminar.
The Scorpio, which Mahindra developed by itself and launched in 2.6-litre turbo diesel and 2.0-litre petrol engine versions in June last year, has grown in popularity over the past 12 months, the report said.
“There is a six-week waiting list for it. That is not the way we like it, but that is the way it is,” Durante told Reuters, adding the company’s vendors were able to increase volumes only gradually.
Reuters said the Scorpio is key to Mahindra’s plans to boosting market share of the hard-top utility vehicle market to 45% from about 35% – its utility vehicle sales have boomed on the back of the Scorpio’s success this fiscal year.
