Mahindra and Mahindra is conducting early-stage feasibility studies on selling cars in the US.
The cars will be manufactured by the company’s subsidiary Ssangyong Motor.
The president of Mahindra’s automotive and farm equipment sectors, Pawan Goenka, said, “Right now what we are doing is very early feasibility study of which products will make sense for the US, what will it take to make those products work, whether it will be financially viable to launch in the US.”
According to Reuters, it is not yet known when the feasibility study, which commenced four to six months ago, would end.
As part of a strategic plan to enter the US, and Asian markets such as China, Ssangyong plans to spend around US$1bn on its product lines. The company plans to build a manufacturing plant in China if annual sales there reach 50,000 vehicles.
Goenka said, “We have not made any firm plans but eventually manufacturing in China, once we get to a certain level in volume, would be something we will be looking at.”
Though it sells farm vehicles there, Mahindra has previously attempted to sell utility vehicles in the US without success and that venture foundered on recriminations and lawsuits between various parties.
