HMIL (Hyundai Motor India Limited) says it will soon reveal a crossover based on the Elite i20. This would mean a third bodystyle for Hyundai’s increasingly globally important B segment model.
Set to join the i20 (the Elite i20 in India, to distinguish it from the older car, which remains in production there) and i20 Coupe, the crossover will be called i20 Active and based on the five-door car. Production will be at the Chennai 2 plant in Tamil Nadu. HMIL is yet to state whether or not there will be exports of this car.
“Designed at Hyundai Motor’s Design Centre Europe in Rüesselsheim, Germany, i20 Active is scheduled to make an official global debut in the Indian market in the month of March 2015,” HMIL said in a statement.
Toyota is already in this segment of the Indian market with its Etios Cross, and Fiat has recently joined with the launch of the Avventura, which is more or less a Punto with raised suspension, bigger bumpers and plastic cladding around its wheelarches.
