Hyundai plans to make India the export hub for the Getz supermini. The local plant is already the export centre for the Santro/Atos small car.
Confirming the move, Hyundai India said Getz production would start in 2007 when capacity will be exapnded.
The Getz is already manufactured and sold in India though volume is small. The car was launched a few months ago into a segment where it currently has practically no competition but will soon face intense competition from Maruti-Suzuki’s redesigned Swift, to be launched at the end of the month.
The base Swift is expected to be priced cheaper than the equivalent Getz and this is likely to put pressure on the rival Hyundai’s sales.
Making India the export hub would make good sense since a boost in output would help drive costs down.
