Honda Cars India plans to launch its new multi-utility passenger vehicle, the Mobilo, within two months.
The car will be based on the Brio platform, reported The Economic Times.
A spokesman said the Mobilio “would be manufactured at our Greater Noida plant, along with other Honda models.” Trial production has started ahead of launch in the second half of this year.
The Mobilio will compete in a segment that includes ‘utility vehicles’ such as the Tata Aria, Toyota Innova, Nissan Evalia and GM’s Enjoy. Sales of such models have slowed in recent months. They slipped 5% to 525,000 units during the April 2013-March 2014 fiscal year, according to The Economic Times.
The company reportedly plans to use Greater Noida for models considered niche and the new Tapukara unit in Rajasthan for high-volume cars such as the Amaze sedan and the upcoming redesigned Jazz [Fit].
An industry source told The Economic Times: “Like the Amaze, which is the solitary model manufactured in Tapukara, all the high-volume new cars in future would be manufactured in the Rajasthan plant. Jazz, with its high level of localisation, would be the second car to be made at Tapukara, while the Mobilio MPV, which may not be a great volume puller, restricted to a few thousand units per month, is being manufactured at the older Greater Noida plant.”
