In an initiative aimed at helping energy conservation, India’s power secretary has said the government wants to make energy efficiency labelling mandatory for cars by August.
HS Brahma told Reuters the move was aimed at certifying the energy efficiency claims of carmakers, while also helping consumer make informed choices.
“This will help consumers in choosing the right quality of vehicle. Many automobile producers say their car can [achieve] an average of 18km or 20km a litre,” he said, implying that an official audit would be beneficial.
He added that market leader Maruti Suzuki had ‘showed interest’ in the process. Further consultations with car companies were planned.
