The Indian government will require new passenger car models of all sizes sold to undergo crash tests and meet minimum safety standards from October 2017, according to the Times of India.

The government is expected to officially announce the new deadline soon as part of a move designed to help increase road safety in the country.

The deadline to introduce crash tests on new generations of models already in production will be October 2019.

Front impact tests will be required at 56km/h and side impact tests at 50km/h based on international standards.

Car companies are encouraged to adopt stricter safety standards before the government deadline in order to promote safety. These measures are expected to increase demand for automotive safety equipment in India such as airbags and other occupant restraint systems.

Other reports in India suggest the Delhi local government is considering banning cars older than 15 years from the roads in an effort to help improve air quality in the country’s capital.
