General Motors India currently has less that 3% of the market and is looking for a volume boost. The premium Aveo U-VA hatchback is key to this as it competes against Maruti’s hugely successful new Swift and Hyundai’s Getz.
The mid-size premium Aveo sedan – similar to a model just launched in that other major emerging market, China – will compete with the Honda City.
There’s also a new Optra SRV (sports recreational vehicle).
All three models have petrol engines between 1.4- and 1.8-litres in capacity.
Local reports said GM is after a 10% market share by 2010, by which time overall volume in the country is projected to double to two million.
GMI reportedly is expanding capacity at its Halol plant in Gujarat from 60,000 units to 85,000 units.
