General Motors India will soon increase the strength of its technical centre at Bangalore in India where the number of employees working in R&D is expected to rise from 40 to 100 by the end of next year.

GM set up the India tech centre last year. It is divided into the R&D section (India Science Labs) and an engineering centre with 260 staff who work on global projects.
The company also has a number of collaborative research laboratories including one with the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. The company has decided to renew their three-year contract for an additional five years.
India Science Labs works on vehicle design tools, enterprise modelling & virtual manufacturing, embedded control systems infrastructure, and automotive materials and chemicals systems. GM is now filing patents for the first innovations from the lab.
Research initiatives include exploring the use of alternative materials or creating them, raising the efficiency of fuels such as petrol and reducing particulate emissions from diesel engines.
