Car sales in India rose 33% in February as customers rushed to buy vehicles ahead of an expected increase in tax announced in the federal budget last month, industry data showed on Monday.
Automakers sold 153,845 vehicles in February, up from 115,505 a year earlier, the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers told AFP.
Sales of trucks and buses jumped 87% to 58,024, indicating a recovery in economic activity.
The government raised vehicle excise duties in the budget as part of a rollback of stimulus measures aimed at shielding India’s economy from the global financial crisis.
