Audi will soon launch SUVs and other luxury cars in India, the local Yahoo News website reported, citing local television station CNBC-TV18.

Audi board member Ralph Weiyler, asked why the automaker was starting production in India, was quoted as saying: “The main reason is that we have to have a competitive product offer and this can be based only effectively on good prices.

“One has disadvantages when one imports cars, instead of producing the cars. That is why we will step into the Indian market.”

He reportedly added: “We see that there is a limited potential from the very beginning. Perhaps next year, something around 1,000 cars, or 800 cars, or something in this range is probably what we want to do.”

According to the report he added: “We want to expand our customer base; we want to develop the brand and to be fit for the moment when the Indian market really takes off. We think that…the car market will develop and also the premium market will develop.”
