Indian passenger car sales rose 16.6% in April to 74,536 units from 63,932 in the same month a year ago, an industry body said on Wednesday.
According to Reuters, the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers also said in a statement that sales of all passenger vehicles – cars, utility vehicles and multipurpose vehicles – rose to 94,765 units in April from 82,496 in same month a year earlier.
The news agency noted that the government plans to make India a global production hub for small cars, and cut manufacturing tax on small cars to 16% from 24% in its federal budget in February.
That move, though boosting sales, hit dealers with stock already on the forecourt at the higher tax rate and some manufacturers provided appropriate financial assistance.
SIAM told Reuters sales of commercial vehicles stood at 28,475 units in April, the first month of the current fiscal year, up from 16,890 units in the same period a year ago.
