India’s largest aluminium company wants to start supplying the local car industry where metal supplies so far are dominated by steel makers.
According to the Economic Times of India, Hindalco Industries will soon make high-grade aluminium vehicle body-in-white products as part of an integration process following its recent acquisition of Novelis.
The paper said the $US6bn acquisition of Novelis, completed in May, has made Hindalco one of the top five aluminium companies in the world while Novelis has already achieved 3% penetration in supplying the car market in Europe.
Hindalco officials told the paper the same could be attempted in India especially at a time when global car companies are planning to launch small cars in the country. Aluminium usage in the body-in-white segment in the Indian car industry is practically nil although the metal is used in radiators and other parts.
