Hyundai Motor announced to the media on Thursday it plans to develop 17 new electrically-driven commercial vehicle models by 2025 in response to increasing demand for environmentally-friendly transportation solutions globally.

The South Korean automaker confirmed it plans to add seven battery-powered vehicles and 10 hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles to its commercial vehicle line-up by the middle of the next decade.

This is a huge vote of confidence in the potential of hydrogen fuel-cells to become a mainstream fuel of the future for road transportation.

Hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles are powered by electricity generated by a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen within the cell stake, with water vapour the main byproduct of the process. Natural gas in generally used as the source of the hydrogen.

The 17 zero-emission commercial vehicles models planned by Hyundai include a battery-powered electric bus model and one powered by hydrogen-fuel cells to be supplied to the Seoul metropolitan city government for use as public transport vehicles.

Earlier this year Hyundai unveiled a 70-passenger double-deck bus with a range of 300km, powered by batteries with an output of 384kWh and fully rechargeable in 72 minutes.
