Hyundai Mobis has unveiled a new, in-house developed “general purpose” 160-kilowatt (kW) Power Electric (PE) drive system for battery electric vehicles (BEVs). The South Korean automaker Hyundai Motor Group’s main components supplier is stepping up its efforts to diversify its customer base and strengthen its presence in the global BEV supply chain.

Hyundai Mobis pointed out that the PE system, consisting mainly of a drive motor, inverter, and reduction gear, is the BEV equivalent of a powertrain in internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.

The new 160-kW EV drive system, with a power output equivalent to 215 hp, follows last year’s unveiling of the company’ high-performance 250 kW PE system, as part of the company’s strategy of “establishing a drive system lineup covering all types of BEVs.”

The company confirmed it is also working on a smaller 120-kW PE system, targeting company BEVs, which it expects to unveil by the end of the first half of 2026.

Hyundai Mobis pointed out that while previously it had mass produced PE systems based on orders from customers, it has now developed its own in-house technologies “for each of the components of the PE system through in-house R&D.”

The company said that during the development process of its PE drive systems, it focused on standardizing and modularizing key components, including the stator for the drive motor, the inverter, and the power module, which includes electronic systems. This helps improve economies of scale, with modules and components able to be used in different PE drive systems.
