Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) has signed an agreement with Enginius, a subsidiary of German special vehicles manufacturer Faun Group, to supply 1,100 HTWO hydrogen fuel cell systems to power the group’s municipal trucks.
Faun, a major player in the European refuse truck market, would install Hyundai’s 90 kilowatt (kW) fuel cell systems in its Bluepower waste collection truck from the second half of 2023.
The Citypower medium duty cargo trucks would be fitted with the HTWO system for field testing in 2024 with series production scheduled to start in 2025.
Hyundai claimed its fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) technology was well established with 30,000 Nexo FCEVs sold worldwide to date.
The automaker had also sold the HFCEV Xcient heavy duty truck in some countries including Switzerland and China.
Enginius is Europe’s first truck manufacturer with an EU type approval for FCEVs and so far has supplied 60 hydrogen Bluepower trucks to waste disposal companies throughout Europe.
