China's mobile internet infrastructure giant Huawei Technologies has established the 5G Automobile Ecosphere with which it aims to help speed up the adoption of 5G mobile communications technology by the country's automotive industry, according to local reports.
Huawei developed the ecosphere with the collaboration of 18 local automakers including the FAW Group, SAIC Motor, BYD Auto, Chang'an Automobile, Great Wall Motors, Dongfeng Motor, Chery Holdings, Guangzhou Automobile and JAC Motors.
Huawei is looking to strengthen its position in the field by becoming the leading provider of 5G connected car infrastructure in the country.
The system relies on vehicle mounted Huawei 5G MH5000 modules and terminal T-Boxes which connect the vehicles to 5G communication services also provided by Huawei.
In additional to the founding members, the 5G ecosphere will also be opened up to other automakers joining in the future.
The report said the 5G automobile ecosphere was one step in Huawei's 1+8+N strategy with 1 referring to smartphones; 8 referring to car mounted computers, smart speakers, earphones, watches/wrist bands, tablets, big screens and PCs while N stands for other devices of Internet of Things.
