
Taiwan’s Hon Hai Precision Industry Company announced at its Tech Day 2021 it planned to establish a software research & development centre to target smart vehicle and connected technology to increase its focus on the expanding automotive software market.
Hon Hai said the new R&D operation would tap into a pool of 1,500 software development engineers already employed at the group and would recruit an additional 1,000 within three years.
The company said in a statement: “This demonstrates our determination to become a software-defined business in the future.”
At the event, held in the Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center, Hon Hai also announced the launch of software innovations for electric vehicles (EVs), including Smart Gateway, Smart Cockpit, Smart Autonomous Driving and other applications developed through partnerships with companies such as AutoCore.ai, Tier IV and Mobile Drive.
The company unveiled three newly developed EV models at the show, including the Model C recreational vehicle, the 750hp Model E luxury sedan designed by Pininfarina and the Model T battery-powered bus.
The two passenger cars would be sold under its partner Yulon Motor’s Luxgen Motor and China Motor Corporation brands.
