General Motors in the US is recalling 179,861 2003-2011 Saab 9-3 vehicles manufactured from 31 May, 2002, to 15 February, 2011, 2010-2011 9-5s made from 23 June, 2010 to 21 February, 2011 and 2008-2009 Opel-made Saturn Astra vehicles manufactured from 11 April, 2007, to 24 July, 2008.
There is a possibility that when the driver's frontal air bag deploys, excessive internal pressure may cause the Takata inflator to rupture with metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
NHTSA said GM dealers would replace the driver's frontal air bag inflator on the 9-3 and 9-5 vehicles and the driver's frontal airbag module on the Astras.
