The Mercedes-Benz and Smart brands sold 107,700 passenger cars worldwide in October 2003, compared with 108,700 in the same month last year. The total of 1,022,300 vehicles sold worldwide to the end of October 2003 is about 2% down on last year.


Worldwide sales of Mercedes-Benz cars totalled 96,400 in October 2003 and, from January to October 2003, Mercedes-Benz sold 918,900 passenger cars around the world, nearly 2% fewer than the same period last year.


US Mercedes-Benz sales in the first 10 months of the year of 178,700 were up 3.6% over the same period last year.


Asian sales of 76,100 were up 8.5% compared with the first ten months of 2002 with Australia recording 12,900 units, up nearly 15% compared with the same period last year. China also posted large gains both for October 2003 (around 900 vehicles, up 44%) and for the first 10 months of the year (6,200 vehicles, up 12%).


In Germany, DaimlerChrysler delivered 30,200 Mercedes-Benz passenger cars in October 2003, nearly 2% fewer than in the same month last year and, to the end of October, sales slipped by just under 8% compared with the same period last year.

Excluding Germany, sales in Western Europe of 297,500 vehicles were down 1% compared with the January to October 2002.


UK sales of 79,300 vehicles year to date were up 11% and there were also rises in Spain and Italy.


To the end of October 2003, the Smart brand sold 103,400 vehicles down 1%.
