The German metalworkers pay dispute is escalating with tens of thousands of workers due to strike today as part of a series of so-called warning strikes where workers down tools for an hour or so at a time.

One of the companies hit over the weekend was Audi , where around 5,000 workers took part in strikes on Saturday night. They consisted of 4,000 workers at Ingolstadt and 1,000 at Neckarsulm.

The IG Metall union represents around 3.6m metal workers in Germany. Employers are offering a 2.1% pay rise plus bonuses, but the union is asking for an 8% rise.

Daimler, VW , Ford and MAN are all expected to be affected by warning strikes today, according to local press reports.
